Many of those now buying iPhones grew up on a diet of classic adventure games in the 1980s, whether early electronic ones from LucasArts and Sierra, or non-digital ones like Dungeons and Dragons and the old Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks. Adventure games are a natural fit for the iPhone, both to tap in to that nostalgia market and because phones seem to suit a more cerebral game rather than the action shooters popular on consoles and PCs.
We’ve scoured the market for the best iPhone adventure games. These also work fine on an iPad, of course.
Fabled Lands: The War Torn Kingdom (£4.99 download)
Somewhere between an adventure game and an RPG, Fabled Lands is strongly reminiscent of those 1980s-era fantasy gamebooks, but more polished and brought into the 21st century. That’s largely because that’s what it is – the Fabled Lands series was originally released, in book format, in the 1990s, intended to be an evolutionary step beyond the old 80s-style gamebooks. This app keeps very much the same plot as the original release, but adds brand-new, somewhat anime-style graphics, as well as letting your phone keep track of all that pesky hit points and gold pieces business. It’s an unforgiving kind of adventure, as is traditional for those days, but that is very much part of its charm, along with the richly detailed background world of Sokara.
Gamebook Adventures: Catacombs of the Undercity (£2.99 download)
Like the Fabled Lands game, Catacombs is very much influenced by the Fighting Fantasy style gamebooks. Like all the Gamebook Adventures series, it’s also very much designed to bring the concept right up to date, while retaining the charm of the originals. So, rather than throwing dice, or having a random number generator simulate the result of throwing dice, you shake your iPhone up and down and the dice physics simulator shows you the dice rolling and landing. Add in a very book-like look to the game, a lot of customisability, and a fiendishly tricky, old-school adventure, and you have a great game, at not much more than you might have paid for a Fighting Fantasy book thirty years ago.
Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge (£1.99 download)
If that title sounds familiar, it probably is! LeChuck’s Revenge was first released twenty years ago, but the iPhone/iPad “special” edition has improved graphics and a couple of other tweaks. In any case, it was way ahead of its time twenty years ago, and will still give you more fun, and more challenge, than plenty of games released since. We’ve picked LeChuck’s Revenge as a standout title, but it’s the sequel to The Secret of Monkey Island which is also well worth a look, particularly if you enjoy LeChuck.
Broken Sword: Director’s Cut (£2.99 download)
This is another “remastered” old-school adventure game, based on a critically acclaimed mid-90s release, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars. It’s the only one of the titles here that’s set in the present day, real world, rather than a fantastic or historical setting, but that just adds to the appeal – it feels like you’re uncovering real conspiracies. Expect classic point-and-click adventure gaming, along with some new puzzles specific to the Director’s Cut.
These games are available on all iOS devices including the new iPhone 4S.
